[ funny choice of words, as bucky is currently holding his phone upside down, trying to figure out where he's supposed to talk into. he does end up putting it to his ear and talking very loudly - so not speaking into the microphone is probably a blessing ]
Pretty good, all things considered. [ honestly, that would have been his reply regardless of his state. ] How are you? Is there a dance night coming up?
[yeah, that's a little loud, but it's okay. she figures he's still learning how to use his phone]
I'm so glad! This place can take a little getting used to. [and it can be a reprieve from home and its troubles] I'm doing fine. And there should be. We're only a few days from new people day and usually they have a dance a couple of days after.
[ basically succeeding at doing anything beyond turning it on is still a small miracle to him; he has no idea how this thing works, and it bugs the hell out of him because it is remarkable and he wants to know. ]
That so? Any other parts of the routine to look forward to? [ expecting the unexpected is, after all, not the greatest plan. it's unexpected - by definition you can't expect it. it'd be nice to know what parts he can actually count on happening. ]
[she had a bit of a learning curve with it as well because from her perspective, it's an antique]
Well, a couple of weeks after that, one of the aliens usually messes with our minds so they can be fed. I haven't had anything . . . awful happen since I came here, they've mostly been awkward and way too into our personal lives. [beyond that and new arrivals day, there's not much that's predictable about this place]
[ nothing awful but involving their personal life? what does that mean? bucky is a fairly open person, but still his personal life is kept mostly private, and he's yet to get close enough to anyone to share any of it. recently, his personal life has been a sort of hell, so he's not looking forward to any of it being known or used by emotion sucking aliens. ]
What do you mean by into our personal lives? [ is he going to smell ma's cooking - which would make him homesick but would at least be a fantastic memory and another gift he didn't expect to get to experience again - or is he going to relive the doctor's hospitality, or see his family's reaction to a letter that's probably reached them by now? ]
[she's a fairly open person, but there's one memory she doesn't want anyone to get a hold on--the moment she thinks she died. as far as she knows, no one has seen anything about that and she'd like to keep it that way.
she sighs] It means . . . one month whenever we touched someone, we got to see one of their memories. Another month, we had visions of what was going on back home without us. That was a little rough. But I've heard that it used to be a lot worse. [it could be all of that and more. the aliens don't have much respect for privacy]
[ there is almost a morbid curiosity in him regarding what's going on at home without him, and honestly he's not sure whether or not he'd rather see it or stay in the dark. but he's damn sure he'd rather not have anyone else see it. he's a proud man, and isn't interested in being pitied. he's doing his duty, that's just his lot in life to live in a time where such duties are called for. ]
Jesus. Worse how?
[ he'd rather be prepared for whatever's coming his way. ]
[she can't blame him, she felt the same way. and she hated seeing what she saw back home. her mother is a powerful woman and if Tinya really had died, she would have taken it out on the Legion by any means necessary]
...apparently one month, half of the town was buried alive and the other half had to find them and dig them up. And another month, eating the meat turned people into monsters.
[that's the worst she's heard, but it's all pretty awful]
it's a good thing she can't see him because just the thought of being buried alive feels like it should be draining the blood from his face (he does, however, only look mortified, retaining his complexion). the guilt over those he's unable to save would be even worse, though, and he's already living with so much of that, too much of that.
people turning into monsters, though, that's another kind of horror. ]
Could they be recognized as people at all? [ accidentally killing an innocent civilian warped by the whims of aliens? maybe he was better off strapped to a table. at least that was a brand of horror he could wrap his mind around. ]</small
[it all sounds horrible to her. granted, she'd be able to use her powers to escape being buried alive and she doesn't eat meat, so she'd escape the monster transformation, too, but she sees it as evidence of how far the aliens are willing to go for what they want]
I don't know. The person I was talking to didn't say. [and for good or bad, death is cheap here. you die, you're resurrected by Hope a few days later]
[ that seems like a risky thing to rely on; they're dependent on these aliens' whims, what's to say that one day they don't decide that they feel like feasting on grief and stop doing that? he's a traditionalist, he'd rather just die the one time, preferably comfortably in his bed as an old man, but since that's not happening, he may as well save it for the war. ]
[there have been months were more than one god has done something. and as far as she knows, there's nothing stopping them from influencing them all the time. she wasn't very impressed by the one alien she spoke to, he didn't exactly show much in the way of empathy for others]
Her name's Sharon. She's a little prickly at first but once you get to know her, she's nice.
[ must be something keeping them, otherwise why not feast constantly? maybe it has to do with the human(ish) mind's capacity, maybe if they don't provide them with breaks they would get desensitized too quickly and they'll run through short cycles, maybe bringing people that consecutively is difficult. whatever the reason, reprieves are to be taken full advantage of. ]
I'll keep that in mind. [ he's not afraid of the prickly ] Any idea where I can find her? I'd very much like to speak to her.
[she takes full advantage of the reprieves to have as much fun as she can, other than her Guard duties. going to the Speakeasy, the hot springs, the bakery, sorting through the shops for vegetarian-friendly cuisine and cute clothes. the latter is harder to find, but she looks at it like a treasure hunt]
There's this place called the Silent Hill zone? She hangs out around there a lot.
Hmm. Maaaaaybe Sansa? Though, she's from a world that's about as far in the past as mine is in the future. And he is? That's great news! I'd love to meet him!
[she doesn't really have female friends here. which is weird to her since she's used to having a lot of female friends in the Legion]
If anything, it'll be nice not to be the only cavemen around.
[ because he sure feels like one around all this future talk and damn phone. ]
I'd love to make an introduction, he's a great guy, I'm sure you'll get along. His name's Steve Rogers.
[ if an alien girl can't get along with steve, the little guy really is doomed. he's holding out for hope, though. his greatest hope is to send steve safely back home with his damn dreams of fighting a war out of his head, but while he's here, he's going to do his best to take care of him and that includes making sure he's got friends other than himself. ]
Cavemen? It's not that bad. It'll just take a little adjustment and you'll be fine. [she offers warmly]
That sounds good, because I'd love to meet him! And any friend of yours is a friend of mine.
[and Tinya's friendly to just about anyone. well, anyone but the resident demon and Tinya just avoids her. avoidance has served to be the best policy so far. but everyone else she's met she's liked! it'll be fine!]
[ he sure hopes so because girls tend to really - literally - look down at steve. he does hope though that it only being a friendship and not a date will help the guy with that, he did get along with bucky's sisters just fine, after all. ]
[ he can't abide bullies. defend yourself or others when the need arises, absolutely, but there's no need to go out of your way to be cruel to another person. ]
